I first went to Dr. Nosti’s office to discuss the appearance of my teeth. I had seen some smiles he had transformed and was hoping he could do the same for me. After my first exam it became quickly obvious that Dr. Nosti was not the average dentist. He asked me questions about my teeth and did an exam unlike any dentist had done before. He suspected I suffered from headaches before I could even tell him.

I had issues with my teeth and gums since I can remember. I tried never to show my teeth when I smiled. I have to tell you that has changed dramatically. I now wonder if I am not smiling too much, just to show off the beautiful smile I have now, thanks to you. You gave me so many choices as to what I could do, and offered your advice when asked.

General Dentistry – TMJ, Dentures, and more in South Jersey

TMJ Treatment in New Jersey

The highly skilled New Jersey cosmetic dentist at Advanced Cosmetic and General Dentistry, Dr. John Nosti, DMD, FAGD, FACE, is one of the leading dentists for the treatment of TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorder in South Jersey. With vast experience treating patients, including more than 1,600 hours of continuing education, Dr. Nosti is respected throughout New Jersey and frequently speaks on 1400 AM WOND talk radio on TMJ disorders. In addition, he is a sought-after lecturer traveling the country to teach other dentists from around the world about temporomandibular joint dysfunction, occlusion (bite relationships) and cosmetics.

What Is It?

The TMJ is the joint where your mandible meets the temporal bone of the skull. It is located on each side of your head just in front of your ear. It contains a small disc of cartilage similar to knee joints so that it may slide easily as you chew or talk. Each time you bite down or grind your teeth, you are putting force on it.

Symptoms that you may be suffering from TMJ disorder include:

  • Jaw clicking or popping
  • Sore jaw muscles
  • Frequent headaches
  • Ear pain and temple area pain
  • Locking of the jaw
  • Difficulty opening your mouth and chewing

Patients with TMJ disorder often feel a sharp pain when they chew, swallow, yawn or talk. Many patients also suffer from constant, dull pain. The pain is generally concentrated around the TMJ, but may spread into the neck and jaw, and often causes frequent headaches.

Proper diagnosis of the disorder is vital to treatment. Dr. Nosti will review your medical history and perform a thorough examination of your occlusion (the way your teeth come together when you bite), and jaw function and muscle function, a procedure known as a bite analysis.

Joint Vibration Analysis

With a simple two-minute test called Joint Vibration Analysis (JVA), Dr. Nosti can assess the amount and type of vibration that occurs in the jaw joint, which is indicative of pathology. JVA is a simple, non-invasive test that is recognized by the American Dental Association for the diagnosis of Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction.

One of the most advanced tools for conducting bite analysis is the TekScan T-ScanŽ II, which Dr. Noveck, Dr. Nosti, and Dr. Katz have incorporated into their South Jersey practice. TekScan is a world leader in creating pressure mapping and force measurement devices for industry and for the medical field.

When the patient bites down on the T-Scan® II sensor plate, an accurate and very detailed measurement of occlusal pressure throughout the mouth is transmitted to a computer to help our doctors with the bite analysis. Both our Mays Landing and Somers Point locations are equipped with the T-Scan® II system. Armed with the precise knowledge of bite force at every contact point, our dentists can plan a truly customized course of dental procedures to give you the uniform occlusion so important in eliminating TMJ disorder.

Remedies for TMJ disorders vary depending on severity. If detected early, we may simply recommend that you rest the jaw muscles by avoiding hard foods, chewing gum, and clenching, and by relaxing the muscles with heat. More serious cases may require the use of an occlusal splint, which will prevent further harm to the TMJ and allow muscle relation.

Our South Jersey office will help you feel relief from pain. The earlier you recognize TMJ disorder, the better chance you have for successful treatment. Contact Advanced Cosmetic & General Dentistry today in Mays Landing and Somers Point, New Jersey.
